The summer air in Oulu carried a crisp edge that morning, even in July. I wandered down to the riverbank where the Kesän Sauna floats on its raft, a spot that's been drawing locals and visitors since 2014. Volunteer-run, it has that community feel, like everyone pitches in to keep the heat going.

I bought my ticket right on the raft, nine euros and twenty-five cents for a single visit, paid by card since that's the only way they take it. The session stretched out to about two hours, plenty of time to settle in. With separate changing rooms for men and women, I slipped into my swimsuit, locked my things in one of the baskets they provide, and stepped out ready for the water and steam.

Settling into the Steam

The sauna itself sat low on the water, rocking gently with the river's flow. Inside, the heat built steadily, shared among a mix of people in swimsuits, as it's a communal setup here. No one under eighteen without an adult, which kept things relaxed and family-friendly on that busy afternoon.

I poured water over the stones, and the steam rose with a hiss, filling the small space. Folks chatted quietly, some dipping out for a quick shower before heading back in. The volunteers kept an eye on things, making sure the last visitors boarded half an hour before closing time.

Outside, the river invited a plunge, cool against the heated skin. I lingered on the deck, watching the Oulu skyline across the water, the old warehouses and modern buildings blending in the distance.

The Quiet Shift

Later, as the afternoon wore on, it turned into one of their silent saunas, like the ones they hold on Wednesdays. The rule was simple: hush in the sauna room, soft voices outside, and no jumping into the water. It changed the mood, letting the sounds of the river take over.

I sat there, sweat beading, listening to the lap of waves against the raft. A few others joined, respecting the quiet, and it felt like a pause in the day. They might close early if the weather turns or if volunteers are short, but that day everything ran smooth.

Afterward, I rinsed off in the shower and changed back, feeling the calm linger as I stepped off the raft. Oulu's coastal breeze picked up, carrying hints of the archipelago beyond.
