RunningSauna

The chill of a Copenhagen afternoon hung in the air as I made my way to Svaneknoppen. I had heard about RunningSauna from a friend who swore by its mix of heat and cold for shaking off the week's grind. Founded by Anders Andersen, the place draws from years of winter bathing and training to build a community around sauna use. It felt like the right spot for someone like me, always chasing that balance of warmth and recovery.

I arrived on a Thursday, one of the days they offer their aufguss sessions. The setup was simple: a changing room and a sauna that fits up to 16 people. No frills, just what you need to focus on the ritual. I paid the 150 DKK for a 75-minute session and stepped inside, ready to join the group.

The Build of Heat and Cold

Inside the sauna, the heat started deep and intense, the kind that seeps into your bones. We sat together, a mix of locals looking to de-stress or recover from a run. The session aimed at personal needs, whether warming up for the weekend or washing away work.

After the heat built, we moved to the havdyp, that bracing sea dip outside. The cold hit sharp, but repeating the cycle brought a rush of joy and restoration. It was all about that contrast, heat followed by cold, over and over. My body felt alive, muscles loosening from the day's tensions.

One guy mentioned using it after fitness, and I could see why. The group dynamic added to it, everyone in their own space but sharing the experience.

Lingering in the Afterglow

As the session wrapped up, I lingered a bit in the changing room, chatting with a few others. RunningSauna caters to different visits, from quick drop-ins to longer marathon gus sessions. This one suited me fine, leaving me refreshed and clear-headed.

Walking back through the neighborhood, with its mix of modern buildings and glimpses of the water, I thought about how the place creates room for whatever you need from a sauna. The community feel stuck with me, a reminder that these rituals are as much about connection as the heat itself.

I left feeling restored, the cold air now welcome rather than biting.
