DGI Byen

The train rumbled into Copenhagen's central station on a crisp autumn morning. I walked a short block to Tietgensgade, where DGI Byen sits right in the thick of the city's energy. Cars zipped by, and people hurried along the sidewalks, but as I stepped through the entrance, the noise faded. This place promised a break from the rush, a spot to slow down.

I paid 150 DKK at the counter and headed toward the new sauna house. The air carried a faint herbal scent even before I reached the garden. It felt like slipping into a quieter world, tucked away from the hectic streets outside.

Paths Through the Sauna Garden

The Saunahaven unfolded around me with winding paths lined by massage stones. I took off my shoes and let my feet press against them, feeling the subtle pressure work into my soles as I strolled. Herbs grew along the edges: rosemary and mint, their leaves brushing my legs and releasing fresh aromas into the breeze.

Cold water showers dotted the area, ready for a quick rinse. I tested one, letting the chill stream over my shoulders. It woke me up, sharp and invigorating, before I made my way to the main sauna. The garden felt like a buffer, easing me from the city's pace into something more serene.

Birds chirped from nearby trees, and the layout encouraged a slow wander. No rush here, just space to breathe.

Settling into the Sauna House

Inside the architect-designed sauna house, the room opened up wide enough for 25 people. Wooden benches tiered along the walls, and I found a spot near the back. The heat started gentle, building as steam rose from the stones. Sessions run 40 to 80 minutes, and mine stretched toward the longer end, giving time to sink in.

Others joined, a mix of locals and visitors, chatting softly in Danish and English. The space held us all without feeling crowded. I closed my eyes, letting the warmth seep into my muscles, easing the tension from my travels.

Toilets were nearby, clean and straightforward, which came in handy after the session. This spot operates every day of the week, from Monday through Sunday, making it easy to fit into any schedule.

The Cool Rinse and Return

When the heat peaked, I stepped out for another cold shower in the garden. The water hit like a shock, but it cleared my head and left me refreshed. I lingered on the paths a bit longer, rubbing my feet over those massage stones one last time.

Drying off, I felt the calm linger as I dressed. Back on Tietgensgade, the city noise returned, but I carried that quiet with me. Copenhagen's blend of rush and retreat stuck in my mind long after.
