The train ride from Copenhagen dropped me off in Avedøre on a crisp Thursday afternoon. This suburb sits just south of the city, with its mix of industrial buildings and quiet residential streets. I walked the short distance to Avedøre Idrætscenter, a sports complex that houses the swimming hall. The air carried a faint salty tang from the nearby harbor as I approached the entrance.

Inside, the place felt welcoming, like a community spot where locals come to unwind. I paid the 85 DKK for my session and headed to the changing area. The saunagus happens here on Thursdays through Sundays, each one lasting about 60 minutes. I timed my visit for the evening slot, eager to try it out after hearing about the setup.

The sauna itself impressed me right away. It sits in the swimming hall, with plenty of space and a high ceiling that made the room feel open rather than stuffy. Three levels of benches let you choose your spot based on how much heat you want. I started on the middle one, settling in as the warmth began to build.

A few others joined, spreading out comfortably without crowding. The wood felt smooth under my towel, and the air held that clean, dry scent of a well-maintained sauna. As the session progressed, the heat rose steadily, drawing out a good sweat. I liked how the design allowed for that gradual intensity, moving up or down as needed.

When the gusmester started the aufguss, the real ritual kicked in. He poured water over the hot stones, sending steam rolling through the room. The heat intensified in waves, and I felt it deep in my muscles. Everyone stayed quiet, focused on the experience, which lasted the full hour.

Afterward, I stepped out to the cold shower nearby. The water hit sharp and refreshing, cooling me down fast. There was also a cold bath option, which I tried next, dipping in slowly to let the chill take hold. It contrasted perfectly with the sauna's warmth.

From there, I wandered to the bassin, the indoor pool area connected to the hall. A quick swim helped ease any lingering tension. The whole setup flowed well, making the visit feel complete.

As I dried off and changed, I noted the parking lot outside offers three hours free, handy if you drive in from farther away. The evening light had faded by then, and I walked back through the neighborhood, feeling relaxed from head to toe.
