Herning Svømmehal

The bus dropped me off near Brændgårdvej on a crisp autumn morning in Herning. I had heard about the local swim hall and its sauna sessions, so I made my way there, towel in hand. The building looked like a typical Danish public facility: clean lines, big windows letting in the gray light. Inside, the air smelled faintly of chlorine from the pools nearby. I paid 60 DKK at the front desk and headed to the changing rooms.

It was a weekday, but the place had a steady flow of locals coming in for a swim or a soak. I changed quickly and stepped into the communal sauna area. The space felt open and shared, with people of all ages chatting quietly or just sitting in silence.

When the Gusmester Poured the Oils

The session started right on time, lasting about 60 minutes. Our gusmester, a calm man with a practiced routine, explained he had chosen oils for a relaxing effect that day. He mixed essential oils with water and poured them over the hot stones. The scent spread slowly at first, a mix of herbs that eased into the air.

Then came the towel swing. He waved his towel in wide arcs, like a propeller, pushing the steam around the room. The heat built up, and the aromas hit stronger, making my skin tingle. Everyone leaned back on the wooden benches, breathing it in. It felt like the vapors wrapped around us, soothing muscles I did not even know were tense.

After a few rounds, we stepped out for a break. The cold bath waited nearby, a quick plunge that shocked the system back to life. I dipped in, the chill biting hard against the heat from before.

Cooling Off by the Pool

The swim hall's pool area connected right to the sauna space, so I wandered over after the cold dip. People swam laps in the main pool, their strokes steady and rhythmic. I sat on the edge for a bit, letting my body adjust. The gusmester had mentioned they do three or four of these saunagus sessions every day, all week long, which explained the regular crowd.

Back in the sauna for another round, he switched to invigorating oils this time. The towel swings filled the room with a fresh, sharp scent that woke me up. Sweat poured off, and the group shared nods of quiet approval. It was communal, easygoing, the kind of place where you could come alone or with friends.

As the session wrapped up, I rinsed off and changed back into my clothes. Walking out into the Herning streets, with their mix of modern buildings and open spaces, I felt lighter. The central Jutland air had a bite to it, but the warmth lingered inside.
