Kaifu‑Bad

Kaifu-Bad is a historic swimming and wellness complex located in Hamburg’s Eimsbüttel district. Operated by Bäderland Hamburg, it is one of the city’s most popular aquatic facilities, combining indoor and outdoor pools with saunas and relaxation areas. With origins dating back over a century, it holds the distinction of being Hamburg’s oldest public bath and remains a cultural fixture for recreation and fitness.

Facilities and Features

Kaifu-Bad includes a 25-meter indoor pool with a non-swimmer section, a year-round heated outdoor pool, and a spacious sauna landscape. During summer, the adjoining open-air area expands into the Freibad Kaifu with a 50-meter sport pool, a 10-meter diving tower, and a large sunbathing lawn. Wellness offerings such as massages, a solarium, and aqua-fitness sessions complement its athletic functions.

Historical Background

Opened in the early 20th century, Kaifu-Bad was among the first public baths built to promote hygiene and social health in Hamburg. Over the decades it has undergone several modernizations, balancing preservation of its traditional architecture with updated energy-efficient systems and accessibility improvements.

Role in the Community

Beyond swimming and sauna use, Kaifu-Bad serves as a neighborhood meeting point that attracts families, students, and seniors alike. Its central location near the Christuskirche U-Bahn station and inclusion in Hamburg’s extensive Bäderland network make it a key part of the city’s leisure and wellness infrastructure
