Holthusenbad

Holthusenbad

Holthusenbad is a historic public swimming and wellness complex in Hamburg’s Eppendorf district, operated by Bäderland Hamburg. Opened in 1914, it combines classical architecture with modern spa and leisure facilities. The venue is known for its wave pool, year-round outdoor pool, and 1920s-style sauna world, making it a cornerstone of local recreation culture.

History and Architecture

Built as the “Badeanstalt Eppendorf,” Holthusenbad was one of Hamburg’s early municipal bathhouses. Its neoclassical design reflects early 20th-century civic architecture. After suffering wartime restrictions and later renovations, the facility preserved its original character while adding contemporary amenities, such as thermal and wellness zones.

Facilities and Offerings

Holthusenbad features multiple pools: an indoor wave pool (11 × 23 m, 32 °C), a 25-meter heated outdoor pool (25 °C), and a 34 °C thermal bath. Visitors can also enjoy a spa area, massages, and aqua-fitness classes. A family-friendly children’s pool and a large water playground cater to younger guests.

Sauna and Wellness

The nine-zone sauna complex—revamped in 2017—evokes the “Golden Twenties” with themed rooms such as “Kaffeestube,” “Glashütte,” and “Lichtspielhaus.” Temperatures range from 45 °C to 100 °C. Additional wellness features include aroma and media saunas, saltwater floating sessions, and candlelight or sound-themed evenings.

Dining and Accessibility

The on-site Restaurant & Café Elvy offers regional dishes, snacks, and beverages for swimmers and sauna guests. The facility is fully accessible, providing adapted showers, toilets, and changing areas, and it is located directly near the U3 Kellinghusenstraße station.
