Pyhäpiilon jääsauna

Snow crunched under my boots as I walked the short path from Ruka center to Pyhäpiilo. The air hung crisp and still, with that sharp bite only Lapland winters deliver. I had heard about this spot on the edge of Pyhäjärvi, a quiet stretch of lake surrounded by thick forests and rolling hills. The sun dipped low, casting long shadows over the frozen water.
When I arrived, the ice sauna stood out against the white landscape, built right on the shore. It felt like stepping into a hidden corner of nature, far from the busier parts of the resort. A small group had gathered, no more than ten of us, all ready for the public session in this unique setup.
Stepping into the Ice Sauna
The door creaked open, and a wave of warmth greeted me from the smoke sauna section. Wood smoke lingered in the air, mixing with the chill outside. We settled on the benches, letting the heat build slowly as conversations flowed in hushed tones.
After a while, the real draw came: the ice sauna itself. Carved from frozen blocks, it offered a different kind of intensity, cool yet enclosed, with panoramic views of the lake through clear walls. I sat there, feeling the contrast sharpen my senses, before heading out to the hot tub nearby. That bubbling water eased the edges, a brief respite in the winter air.
A relaxation room waited inside, simple and cozy, where we could unwind with the lake view stretching out.
The Avanto Plunge
The group moved toward the avanto, that hole cut into the lake ice for dipping. Steam rose from our skin as we stepped from the sauna heat into the cold. I went first, lowering myself into the dark water. The shock hit fast, every nerve firing, but it cleared my head like nothing else.
Back on the shore, I wrapped up and watched others take their turns. Laughter echoed across the frozen surface, mixing with the quiet of the surrounding nature. The whole experience tied together the smoke sauna's warmth, the ice structure's novelty, and that icy plunge into Pyhäjärvi.
As I walked back through the snow, the resort lights twinkled in the distance. The session had lasted a couple of hours, leaving me refreshed in that deep, bone-level way only a Finnish winter sauna can provide.
