Original Sokos Hotel Seurahuone, Kotka

The sea breeze carried a hint of salt as I walked through Kotka's center toward the Original Sokos Hotel Seurahuone. It was a crisp autumn afternoon, and the hotel stood right on the main street, surrounded by shops and the hum of city life. Kotka sits on an island edged by the Gulf of Finland, with parks nearby that draw people year-round. I had checked in earlier, drawn by the promise of saunas high above the rooftops.
After settling into my room, I headed to the eighth floor around six in the evening. The sauna area was open from five to ten each night, every day of the week. I changed in the quiet locker room and stepped into one of the three saunas, each with its own terrace.
The Steam and the City Below
Inside, the heat wrapped around me gently, the kind of warmth that builds without rushing. Wooden benches lined the walls, and the air felt clean, almost soft. I sat for a while, letting the steam loosen the day's tension from my shoulders. A few other guests came and went, but it never felt crowded.
When I needed a break, I pushed open the door to the terrace. The view stretched out over Kotka, with the sea in the distance and the city's lights starting to flicker on as dusk settled. The cool air hit my skin, a sharp contrast to the sauna's embrace. I lingered there, watching boats in the harbor and the outlines of the famous parks below. Back inside for another round, the cycle of heat and cool refreshed me deeply.
The hotel's commitment to the environment showed in small ways, like the Green Key certification, but it blended into the background of the experience.
Winding Down with a Meal
After my time in the sauna, I took the elevator down to the first floor. The hotel buzzed with activity, people heading to dinners or meetings. I wandered into Amarillo, one of the restaurants on site, for some mextex food. The place had a lively feel, with plates of burgers and fresh drinks passing by.
Earlier, I had noticed the gym in the basement, open around the clock for guests, but I skipped it that night. Instead, I reflected on how the sauna's location, right in the heart of town, made it easy to pair with a walk through the nearby parks or a quiet evening in. The maritime history of Kotka lingered in the air, much like in the hotel's own atmosphere.
As I finished my meal, the day's relaxation settled in fully.
