The road to Kinnula wound through dense pine forests, the kind that stretch out endlessly in Finland's Lakeland region. I arrived at Karkausmäen Kammari on a crisp autumn afternoon, with leaves turning gold under a gray sky. The place sits close to Salamajärvi National Park, surrounded by trails that lead into the wilderness. I had booked a spot for the sauna, drawn by the promise of a wood-fired setup right in the heart of nature.

Parking was straightforward, with plenty of space near the main building. Inside, the air carried a faint scent of fresh bread from the restaurant area. I checked in and learned that the sauna is part of their offerings, available to guests staying in one of the five double rooms or even those camping nearby.
