Camping Silversand

The wind off the Baltic carried a salty chill as I pulled into Camping Silversand, tires crunching over the gravel path. Hanko sits at Finland's southern tip, a quiet coastal town where the archipelago stretches out like scattered stones. I had come for the saunas, drawn by tales of wood-fired heat right on the shore. The place felt open and wild, with tents pitched among pines and cabins dotted along the sand.

I checked in at the main office, where a map showed the layout: three zones for camping, from caravan spots to tent areas. Thirteen cabins stood ready for rent, but I opted for a simple day visit to try the saunas. The site runs year-round, a steady spot amid the changing seasons.

Stepping into Saunalandia

The larger sauna, called Saunalandia, waited near the water's edge. I rented it for an afternoon slot, suitable for a small group though I went solo this time. Inside, the wood-fired stove crackled, building a steady warmth that chased away the coastal damp.

I tossed water on the stones, and steam rose with a hiss, filling the air with that clean, woody scent. A hot tub bubbled outside, panoramic views stretching to the horizon where sea met sky. Families and couples shared the space on busier days, but mine felt private, just the rhythm of waves below.

After the heat built, I stepped out to the sea access. The water was cold and bracing, a quick dip that sharpened every sense. Back in the sauna, the cycle repeated, soft löyly easing into my bones.

Pizza by the Sunset Fire

As evening approached, the restaurant area stirred to life. On weekends, they fire up pizzas at sunset, the flames adding to the woodsy aroma drifting from the saunas. I grabbed a slice, dough crisp from the open flame, and ate while watching the light fade over the long natural sand beach.

Smaller barrel saunas dotted the shore, available for rent too, perfect for pairs or families seeking a cozier spot. The saunas heat up every day, a reliable draw for locals and travelers alike. Nearby, options for electric bike rentals or kayak outings tempted me, but I stuck to the warmth, letting the day unwind slowly.

Walking back through the pines, the marine air felt fresh against my skin. Silversand blended nature and comfort in a way that lingered, a coastal retreat where sauna rituals met the open sea.
