Skodsborg Kurhotel

Skodsborg Kurhotel - Image

A light mist hung over the Øresund strait as I walked from the train station to Skodsborg Kurhotel. The coastal path wound past old villas and patches of woodland, with the sea air carrying a faint salt tang. I had heard about this place through a friend who swore by its spa days, so I decided to spend an afternoon there.

The hotel sat right on the water's edge, its white facade blending with the Danish landscape. I checked in at the front desk and paid 895 DKK for a full spa day access. That included entry to the sauna areas and the scheduled saunagus sessions, which run every day of the week.

The Saunagus Build-Up

I changed into a robe and headed to the sauna room, where a group of about ten others had gathered. The air felt warm already, with a subtle humidity that promised more to come. The gusmester entered quietly, carrying a bucket of water mixed with essential oils.

He started the 45-minute session by pouring the mixture over the hot stones. Steam rose in waves, filling the space with heat that built layer by layer. I sat on the wooden bench, feeling my skin prickle as the temperature climbed. Sweat beaded on my forehead, and I focused on my breathing to stay relaxed.

Halfway through, he fanned the air with a towel, sending bursts of hotter air toward us. The intensity peaked, then eased as he signaled time for a break. We filed out slowly, bodies steaming in the cooler hallway air.

Dipping into the Havdyp

From the sauna, I stepped outside to the havdyp area, where a path led down to the sea. The water looked inviting under the gray sky, waves lapping gently against the shore. I lowered myself in, the cold shock hitting my heated skin like a jolt.

That contrast sharpened everything, from the chill wrapping around my legs to the distant sound of gulls overhead. I stayed in for a minute or two, then climbed out, refreshed and ready for more. Back inside, I warmed up by the pool, watching others float lazily in the water.

The pool area stretched out with large windows overlooking the strait. I swam a few laps, the water cool but not as biting as the sea dip. It rounded out the cycle nicely, easing the tension from the heat.

Winding Down by the Water

After another round in the sauna, I found a spot on the terrace to relax. The hotel's grounds sloped toward the beach, with lounge chairs scattered around. I sipped herbal tea and gazed at the horizon, where Sweden loomed faintly across the strait.

The whole visit left me with a deep sense of calm, the kind that lingers after a good sauna day. As evening approached, I dressed and walked back to the station, the mist thickening into fog.
