Fjordens Saunagus

Fjordens Saunagus - Image

The wind off the fjord carried a salty chill as I arrived at Søndervang 10 in Roskilde. It was a gray afternoon in early spring, the kind where the air feels crisp against your skin. I had booked a session online through their site, paying 195 DKK for what promised to be ninety minutes of sauna time by the water.

The setup looked simple from the outside, a sauna structure positioned near the edge of the fjord. I changed into my swimsuit in a small area nearby and joined a group of about ten others. We all seemed eager for the warmth ahead.

As we settled in, the gusmester greeted us quietly. He explained that this spot in North Zealand let us combine the heat with dips in the surrounding water, either the fjord or a nearby lake if we preferred.

The Gusmester's Steady Pour

Inside the sauna, the heat built gradually. The gusmester, trained and attentive, started the ritual by pouring water over the hot stones. Steam rose in waves, filling the space with a clean, humid warmth.

He moved with care, fanning the air to spread the heat evenly. I felt the details he mentioned, like the way he adjusted the steam's flow to suit the group. Sweat beaded on my skin as the session unfolded over those ninety minutes.

We took breaks to step out and breathe the cool air. The fjord lay just steps away, its surface calm under the overcast sky.

That First Jump into the Water

After the first round of heat, I followed the others to the edge. The fjord dip was the highlight here, a chance to plunge into the cold water right by the sauna. I lowered myself in, the chill biting sharp against the heat from my body.

The water felt alive, pulling away the sweat and leaving me refreshed. Back in the sauna, the contrast made the warmth even more intense. We repeated this a few times, alternating between the steam and the dips.

Roskilde's landscape added to it, with the town's old cathedral visible in the distance and the quiet harbor nearby. It was easy to see why they chose spots like this across Mid Zealand and Greater Copenhagen for their sessions.

By the end, I walked away feeling light, the salt from the fjord still on my skin.
