Heat ‘N’ Herbs

Heat ‘N’ Herbs - Image

The rain fell steady as I walked from the bus stop in Hvidovre, a quiet suburb just outside Copenhagen. Tall apartment blocks lined the streets, mixed with patches of green. I found Heat ‘N’ Herbs on Gungevej, tucked into a simple building that blended right in. Inside, the air carried a faint wood scent, and I paid 170 DKK for a 60-minute session. They run aufguss on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays, but I came on a weekday for something calmer.

I changed in the small locker room and stepped into the sauna. It followed the old Finnish style, with dry heat building slow and steady.

That First Wave of Heat

The room hit around 80 degrees Celsius, maybe a touch more, with low humidity that let the warmth sink deep. I sat on the wooden bench, feeling my muscles loosen as sweat started to form. No steam or infusions here: just pure, intense dry air, the kind Finns have used for centuries. It felt therapeutic, like the heat was pulling tension right out of my joints.

After about 10 minutes, my skin tingled. I stepped out and headed for the cold shower. The water shocked my system, ice-cold and quick. Blood rushed through me, and I felt that boost in circulation they talk about. It perked up my whole body, like waking from a deep sleep.

I repeated the cycle a couple times within the hour. Each round built on the last, leaving me refreshed rather than worn out.

Cooling Off in the Quiet

Between sessions, I rested in a small lounge area with herbal teas on offer. The place kept things simple, no fancy extras, but that suited the Finnish tradition. Outside, the Danish suburbs stretched flat, with bikes parked along the road and distant views of the city. I thought about how this ritual boosts metabolism and overall well-being, as the cool air dried my skin.

By the end of the 60 minutes, I felt light and relaxed. The low humidity made the heat bearable, even invigorating. I dressed and stepped back into the rain, carrying that warm glow with me.

Walking to the bus, I passed a few local shops. Hvidovre has that everyday feel, close enough to Copenhagen for a quick trip but far from the tourist crowds.
