Hotel Marienlyst

The sea air carried a chill as I walked along Strandvej toward Hotel Marienlyst. Helsingør sat quiet that afternoon, with the Øresund Strait stretching out blue and calm beyond the hotel grounds. I had heard about their saunagus sessions, those guided rituals that blend heat with scents and sounds. After checking in at the front desk, I paid the 299 DKK for an afternoon slot and headed to the changing rooms.
The lounge area felt welcoming, with soft seating and views of the pool outside. I slipped into my robe and made my way to the sauna, where a small group had already gathered. The session was set to last 45 minutes, broken into three parts, each building on the last.
The Oils and the Rising Heat
We started with the first infusion. The guide poured pure essential oils onto the hot stones, and the air filled with a clean, herbal scent that eased into my lungs. Steam rose, wrapping around us as the heat climbed steadily.
A meditative soundtrack played softly in the background, like a blanket of sound that pulled my thoughts inward. Between rounds, we stepped out for a spirulina shot, green and tangy, chased by some salty snacks to keep the body steady. It all felt like a careful rhythm, heat giving way to cool relief.
By the second session, sweat beaded on my skin, and the oils shifted to something sharper, cutting through the warmth. I closed my eyes and let the sounds guide me, forgetting the world outside.
Ending with the Cold Dip
The final round brought the heat to its peak, intense but not overwhelming. We lingered a bit longer this time, letting the steam work its way deep.
Afterward, I chose the cold bath for my dip, plunging into the koldt bad that waited nearby. The shock of it sharpened everything, pulling me back to the present with a rush. Some others headed to the pool instead, floating in the warmer water under the open sky.
Dried off and relaxed, I sat in the lounge for a while, watching the light fade over the strait. These rituals run every day, morning and afternoon, making it easy to fit into a trip. As I left, the coastal wind picked up again, carrying the salt from the sea.
