Nordens Saunagus

The wind off the Kattegat carried a sharp chill as I parked near Gilleleje Veststrand. Gilleleje sits on Denmark's north coast, a quiet fishing town with long beaches and old thatched-roof houses. I had come for a sauna gus session at Nordens Saunagus, drawn by the promise of heat followed by cold dips in the sea.
I arrived on a Thursday afternoon, one of the days they run these events alongside Sundays. The spot was right by the water, at Gilleleje Strandvej 29. Everyone seemed welcome, from locals to visitors like me. I paid 225 DKK for the 75-minute session and settled in, ready for the routine of warmth and chill.
The air smelled of salt and wood as I changed and entered the sauna space. It felt like a simple setup, focused on the basics of relaxation.
Building the Heat
Inside the sauna, the heat started slow and built up. We sat on wooden benches, a small group sharing the space. The gus part came next: steam infused with scents that filled the room, easing tension from the day.
I closed my eyes and let the warmth sink in. It was not rushed. The session aimed for calm, a break from the usual hurry. Sweat beaded on my skin as the temperature rose. Someone fanned the air, spreading the heat evenly. It pulled me into a quiet state, like the source described: a journey toward more presence.
After a while, the heat peaked. My muscles loosened, and my mind cleared. The group stayed silent, each in their own thoughts. It felt good, this shared ritual by the sea.
The Cold Rush
We stepped out for the dips. First came the ice bath, a tub of freezing water that shocked the system. I lowered myself in, breath catching as the cold gripped me. It lasted just long enough to wake everything up, then out I came, skin tingling.
Next was the havdyp, straight into the sea. The waves lapped at the shore, gray under the winter sky. I waded in, the water biting at my legs. Submerged for a moment, I felt alive, refreshed. Back on the sand, the wind dried me off quick.
We repeated the cycle: sauna, steam, cold. Each round deepened the relaxation. By the end of the 75 minutes, I walked away feeling steady, more grounded. The town faded behind me as I drove off, the sea still humming in my ears.
