Feriecenter Slettestrand

The road to Feriecenter Slettestrand wound through flat Jutland fields, with the North Sea wind picking up as I got closer to Fjerritslev. I arrived in the late afternoon, when the light was turning golden over the dunes. The place felt tucked away, like a quiet spot for locals and travelers looking to unwind after a day out.
I had booked a session in the Havbadehuset, drawn by the promise of a proper sauna gus. It cost 75 DKK for about an hour, which seemed fair for the setup. As I changed into my towel, I could already smell a faint herbal note in the air.
When the Gusmester Poured the Water
We settled into the large sauna, a group of about ten, facing windows that looked out over the rolling dunes. The heat started gentle, building as the gusmester explained the ritual. He mixed water with essential oils and poured it straight onto the hot stones in the oven.
Steam rose quickly, carrying scents that reminded me of fresh woods and herbs. The room filled with that mix, and I felt my muscles start to loosen against the wooden bench. Outside, the dunes shifted in the breeze, adding to the sense of being close to nature.
He kept things light, sharing a few tall tales about old sea adventures, which got quiet laughs from the group. The atmosphere stayed cozy, everyone relaxing into the warmth.
Swinging the Towel Through the Steam
After the pour, the gusmester picked up his towel and began to swing it in wide arcs. That motion pushed the scented steam around the room, wrapping us in waves of heat and aroma. My skin tingled as the air grew thicker, thoughts drifting to open fields and distant shores.
We repeated this a couple of times during the 60-minute session, each round building on the last. Between them, I stepped out for a quick dip in the cold bath, the chill biting sharp against the sauna's glow. There was a pool nearby too, though I stuck to the basics that day.
By the end, my body felt refreshed, mind clear from the sensory shift. I lingered a bit, watching the dunes fade into twilight, before heading back along the quiet road.
