Mobil-Saunagus

The coastal wind carried a salty chill as I pulled up to Poppelvej in Faxe Ladeplads. This small town on Zealand's east coast feels quiet, with fields stretching toward the Baltic Sea. I had booked a VikingeGus session, drawn by the promise of ice baths and sauna rituals in a mobile setup. Flora Cornelia Hjorth and Henrik Frydkjær started this in the summer of 2020, the first in Denmark to blend those cold dips with saunagus.
I arrived on a Sunday afternoon, one of their regular days alongside Wednesdays. The base sits in scenic spots by the water, and that day the sea lapped gently nearby. They specialize in sauna barrels and smaller saunas, which added a cozy, intimate feel to the whole thing.
Stepping Into the Barrel
The sauna barrel waited outdoors, simple and rounded like a wooden tub. I changed in the indoor area they provide, grabbing a towel before heading out. A toilet and outdoor shower stood ready nearby, practical touches for the session.
Inside the barrel, the heat built steadily. It was a mindful saunagus, guided with care. The air grew thick and warm, easing away the day's tensions. They focus on strengthening physical and mental well-being, and I felt that as the session unfolded over two hours. For 295 DKK, it included everything: the sauna, the guidance, and what came next.
We paused midway. The group was small, fitting the barrel's size. Henrik supervised as we prepared for the cold part.
The Zero-Degree Plunge
The ice bath sat outside, water hovering around zero degrees. They have guided thousands through this, many facing the cold for the first time. I was one of them that day. The supervision made it less daunting: breathe deep, ease in, hold for a bit.
The shock hit my skin like needles, but something shifted inside. Mental clarity followed the physical jolt. After, an option for a sea bath lingered, though I stuck to the ice. Back to the sauna barrel for another round, the contrast sharpened every sense.
They offer mobile setups too, bringing barrels and baths to events. An event area nearby hinted at larger gatherings, but my visit stayed personal.
Winding Down by the Water
As the two hours wrapped up, I rinsed off under the outdoor shower. The sea breeze felt different now, invigorating rather than chilly. They train gusmestres on three-day courses, which explains the polished ritual.
Walking back through the fields, I thought about the blend of ice and heat. It left me refreshed, stronger in body and mind. Faxe Ladeplads's quiet coast made the perfect backdrop for it all.
