Nimbus Öckerö Sauna

The ferry ride from Gothenburg brought me to Öckerö on a crisp autumn morning. The island sat quiet in the Bohuslän archipelago, with rocky shores and fishing boats dotting the water. I walked along Björnhuvudsvägen, past simple houses and patches of wild grass, until I reached the Nimbus Öckerö spot at number 49. The sauna building stood at the very end of the pier, overlooking the sea and coastline.
I had booked a two-hour session for 450 SEK through their website, paying right away with Swish. The confirmation email came with a code for the showers and toilets further down the dock. I brought my own towel and swimwear, as required. A small group of locals joined, making us about six in total, though it could fit up to eight.
Settling into the Heat
Inside, the sauna felt cozy and straightforward, with wooden benches facing the panoramic view through a large window. The heat rose steadily as we sat and chatted about the island's hiking trails and kayak rentals nearby. Outside, the sea breeze carried a salty tang that mixed with the warm air when someone cracked the door.
After about twenty minutes, sweat beaded on my skin. The session stretched to 120 minutes, giving plenty of time to build up that deep warmth. I stepped out once or twice to cool off on the pier, watching waves lap against the rocks. Nature surrounded us here: gulls overhead, distant islands on the horizon.
Back in, the group shared quiet stories. No rush, just the rhythm of heat and rest.
The Dip into Cold Water
When the heat peaked, I headed for a dip. Options included the calmer harbor waters or the new jetty reaching out to the open sea. I chose the jetty, climbing down the ladder into the chill. The water hit sharp and refreshing, especially with autumn's edge in the air. It woke every sense, pulling me back to the present.
Others followed, some opting for the harbor side. We laughed about the shock, then hurried back to the sauna's embrace. A quick shower rinsed off the salt before returning. These cycles repeated over the two hours, blending warmth with the sea's bite.
As the session wound down, I lingered on the pier, towel around my shoulders. The view stretched wide, coastline curving away under a gray sky.
Heading Back Across the Island
Walking away, I passed the guesthouse and dining areas at Nimbus, where weekend menus drew a few visitors. The island offered more: bicycle paths, hiking spots, even retreats or events like weddings. But that day, the sauna stood out, simple and tied to the water.
I caught the ferry back, body still humming from the heat and cold. If I returned, I might book the four-hour option for 900 SEK, to stretch it longer into the evening.
Good to know
