Vinterkajakk & badstu i Ålesund

The air felt crisp as I arrived at the activity center on Notenesgata in Ålesund. Snow dusted the streets of this fjord town, known for its Art Nouveau buildings. I had signed up for a winter kayaking trip that promised a sauna finish, something new for me after saunas in Finland and Sweden.
The guide greeted our small group and handed out gear: dry suits, life jackets, and paddles. We went through a quick safety talk, covering how to handle the tandem kayaks. They felt stable, even for someone like me who paddles now and then. Soon we pushed off from the shore into the calm waters of Brosundet.
The Gulf Stream kept the water from freezing, and it stayed clear enough to spot fish darting below. A few starfish clung to rocks as we glided past. Our guide shared stories about the local area, pointing out old warehouses along the harbor. Paddling in tandem made it easy to chat and take in the views.
Spotting Seals in the Distance
We paddled farther out, away from the town center. The fjord opened up, with mountains rising on either side. I felt the rhythm of the strokes, steady and smooth.
At one point, the guide paused us to watch a seal pop its head above the water. It watched us back, curious, before diving down. The water stayed mild, not the icy shock I expected in winter Norway. We turned back after about an hour, arms tired but spirits high.
Everyone in the group seemed comfortable, from beginners to those more at ease on the water. The age limit started at thirteen, and our group fit that, all in normal shape and under the weight cap. No one had touched alcohol, as per the rules, which kept things safe and focused.
Stepping into Svai Sauna
Back on shore, we headed straight to Svai sauna in Brosundet. The building sat right by the water, simple and inviting after the chill of the paddle. I peeled off the dry suit and stepped inside, feeling the warmth wrap around me.
The sauna room had wooden benches and a stove that hummed softly. Steam rose as water hit the hot stones, carrying a faint salty scent from the sea nearby. We sat for a while, letting the heat sink in, talking about the kayak sights.
After sweating it out, a quick dip in the fjord refreshed everything. The contrast hit just right, cold water against warmed skin. The whole trip wrapped up there, a solid mix of adventure and relaxation in Ålesund's winter setting.
