Damp Sauna Hinna & Gausel

The wind off the fjord carried a sharp chill as I parked at Vaulenstranden and started the eight-minute walk to Hinnastranden. Stavanger's coastline here feels rugged, with waves lapping at sandy stretches backed by low hills. I had booked a spot in Maija, one of the larger saunas run by Damp Sauna, drawn by its size and the promise of space for a group.
Inside, the changing room felt roomy, enough for twenty-five people if needed. I changed quickly and stepped into the sauna itself. The heat built steadily, wrapping around me as I settled on the bench.
Climbing to the Rooftop Terrace
After about eight minutes, the warmth pushed me out toward the terrace. Maija has its own rooftop area, open to the sky and the sea below. I stood there for a moment, feeling the cool air contrast with my heated skin.
A few others from the group joined me. Someone mentioned trying the dive. I watched as one person took the plunge from the edge, straight into the water. The drop looked short but thrilling against the beach backdrop. I followed, the cold shock of the fjord water hitting me all at once.
We repeated the cycle a couple of times, alternating between the sauna's steady heat and the terrace's brisk exposure. The group dynamic made it lively, with chatter filling the pauses.
Exploring the Twin Saunas Nearby
Later, I wandered over to check out Ritva and Teija, the twin saunas nearby on the same beach. Each holds up to twelve people and stands separate from the other. They share a large changing area, which felt practical for families or friends splitting up.
I peeked into Ritva, empty at the time. The setup mirrored Maija's in its simple wood interior, but smaller and more intimate. No rooftop here, just direct access to the sand and sea for cooling off.
The whole area around Hinnastranden buzzed quietly with a few locals walking dogs or jogging. As I headed back along the path to the parking lot, the fjord's gray water reflected the overcast sky. That mix of heat, cold, and open space lingered with me on the drive back into Stavanger.
