Flabellina

The ferry ride across the fjord left me with that crisp Norwegian air in my lungs as I pulled up to Flabellina in Lonevåg. Nestled in the hills of Osterøy, the spot felt tucked away among the steep mountains and deep waters of Vestland. I had booked my drop-in session online the day before, paying with my card through their site. It was a gray afternoon in Fjord Norway, with mist hanging low over the water.
I stepped out of the car and followed the path to Den Grøne Fabrikken, where the sauna sits. The building had an earthy feel, like it blended right into the landscape. I brought a bottle of water as suggested, knowing I'd need to sip it often during the stay.
The Badstumeister's Welcome
A friendly badstumeister greeted me at the door. He had already fired up the Finnish wood stove, and the warmth spilled out as he showed me around. The sauna could fit up to eight people, or ten if everyone knew each other well. Today, it was just a small group of us dropping in for the seventy-minute session.
We settled in, and he pointed out the decorations. They drew from sea slugs in the ocean, with shapes and colors that added a quirky touch inside and out. It made the space feel alive, like stepping into an underwater world on dry land. The heat started to build, somewhere between sixty and eighty degrees, easing into my muscles and joints.
I felt my blood moving better, the stress from travel slipping away. It was like recharging in a quiet corner of the world.
Stepping Out for the Chill
After a good sweat, the badstumeister suggested cooling off. I chose the fresh fjord bath, walking down to the water's edge. The mountains rose sharp around us, and the cold hit my skin like a wake-up call. It was invigorating, that mix of warm sauna and icy dip.
Back inside, some folks used the local outdoor shower instead. Showers and toilets were handy at the factory site. I took a sip of water and returned to the heat, letting the cycle repeat. The whole thing felt social, like a gathering spot for friends or family.
By the end, I walked back through the mist, body relaxed and mind clear. The fjord views lingered in my thoughts long after.
